I’m in general agreement with this sentiment–now is not the time to exercise our ability to be inoffensive. I find myself worrying, however, about the case where a non-middle-eastern person is recruited to deliver a destructive device. Frankly, though, the whole frisking and shoe-removing security measure is a little silly anyway; every time a new plot comes out, it involves different substances and articles of clothing. Here’s my hope: this screening baloney at the airport, with the wands and the confused-looking screeners and the “please surrender your nail clippers” stuff is just a diversion. Somewhere in the back is a room with a supercomputer trained to recognize terrorists, run by four or five Jack Bauer types, and that’s the real security measure. I suppose that’s a bit unrealistic, though.
