When Powers died, to little fanfare in June, a man named Mark Pfeifer (retired from Dow Jones) was appalled by the disproportionate amount of coverage given to Michael Jackson. He penned an e-mail about a chance encounter he had had with the humble war hero at the Philadelphia airport. The e-mail went viral as friends forwarded to friends.
Take a moment to remember Shifty Powers today.
Shifty was a hero. When I see pictures of these old warriors and read the character in their faces, I have to remember that they were just teenagers or a little older when they were called upon to do their duty as men. God love ’em all. I figure that Shifty and his band of brothers who preceeded him to heaven are having a great reunion.
