Typical

I don’t know if Obama’s granny was a “typical white person” or not, but he sure sounds like a typical politician.

Without saying a word.

Now, I have the habit of trying to shake their hands. Especially with the WWII vets, of whom so few remain. But sometimes it means interrupting. This is a nice idea.

Silver Lining Dept

Could Chavez have, pardon the expression, FARCed himself?

As for Chávez, his saber-rattling is choking vital two-way trade with Colombia, despite the fact that the Venezuelan people have been rioting for months over the scarcity of basic staples. Indeed, Lieutenant Colonel Chávez may be the only military leader in history to attack his own supply lines. His pointless deployment of thousands of troops along Venezuela’s remote western border must be draining vast resources from a disastrously managed national budget.

Child Abuse

Filling little kids’ heads with leftist worries about adult things is just sick. I can tell I’m going to be fighting it every day my daughter is in school. As far as I’m concerned, every parent of a child appearing in this video should be arrested for child abuse.

Or, better yet, forced to move some place where they have similarly enlightened views on how to raise kids.

From Derb’s Lips

to God’s ear?

I repeat: Obama’s toast. He may yet get the Democratic nomination, but tens of millions of Americans who are neither (a) black nor (b) guilty white liberals are simply appalled that Obama would revere a guy like Jeremiah Wright for 20 years, whatever the particularities of which services he did and didn’t attend. It defies belief that Obama knew this man for all that time, intimately enough to have him supervise at the Obama wedding and the children’s baptisms, yet did not know that Wright is a white-hating, America-hating crank. Who on earth believes this?

Either/Or

VDH surveys the Rev. Wright flap and boils the choices down:

EITHER: ‘Obama probably knew what was going on at Trinity, but, given the complex circumstances and Obama’s other strengths, it doesn’t matter enough to affect my vote;’

OR: ‘Obama’s attendance and his feeble reaction to the criticism of Wright provide a valuable warning of why someone so inexperienced and yet so familiar with extremists should not be President of the United States next year.’

It’s left to the electorate, as it should be.

Of course, Mark Steyn has his own way of shedding light on the decision.

Derb wondered the other day whether the Obama campaign was a massive “con job”. But it’s worse than that. If he were a con artist, he’d be like every other opportunist pol contemplating a run for the presidency: he’d be slick enough to know from the get-go that the Reverend Wright was a guy he needed to keep at way beyond arm’s length; instead, he named his big pre-campaign hey-world-here-I-am book after one of his sermons. That suggests Obama didn’t even appreciate Wright was a potential problem. Which, in turn, suggests a candidate as disconnected from reality as his pastor is.

Perspective

Raymond S. Kraft provides a brief but useful bit of historical perspective. I would quibble with some of his analysis, but his presentation of the big picture is very concise.

Recommended.

Reading Minds

I knew, vaguely, that fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) was going to reveal tremendous amounts of information about brain function in the very near future.

It seems the future is closer than my puny imagination thought. Soon scientists may be able to reconstruct dreams.

If we can keep our civilization from imploding or being overrun by 7th-century barbarians, some absolutely amazing stuff is in store, even in what’s left of my lifetime. What an exciting time to be alive!

Sometimes Profanity Is Just Fine

The profanity in this column will be forgiven by me and, I suspect, by you because of who wrote it. See if you can guess who before following the link:

I began reading not only the economics of Thomas Sowell (our greatest contemporary philosopher) but Milton Friedman, Paul Johnson, and Shelby Steele, and a host of conservative writers, and found that I agreed with them: a free-market understanding of the world meshes more perfectly with my experience than that idealistic vision I called liberalism.

Welcome aboard, Mr. M—-.

When I read about the violent, misogynistic depravity of Arab/Muslim culture such as the barbarous practice of “honor killings”, I really want to let loose.  Out of deference to the delicate readers of my blog I’ll hit a middle ground and just call them a bunch of sick f***tards.

Frankly, every time I go through what is called “Airport Security” anymore I wonder if the terrorists haven’t already won. They not only murdered three thousand in New York, but now we have a giant government bureaucracy run by idiots and entirely staffed by unionized idiots putting us through a song and dance which doesn’t make us one whit safer than we were on September 10th.

Well, at least I can fly safe in the knowledge that bloggers won’t be bringing down the airplane with their elegant laptops.

Bad Science Journalism

and the Myth of the Oppressed Underdog.

Beware the underdog narrative in science journalism. This narrative severely misrepresents how science really works. It’s designed to elicit our sympathy for a not-yet-established theory, maybe one that is socially attractive, and to arouse our indignation against the staid community of eggheaded scientists. This underdog narrative plays on our emotions, it makes for a good read, and helps us feel good about ourselves when we stand up for our convictions.

Update:

Yon’s book is due out April 22. Signed copies can be purchased here.

Yet Another Update:
